CHICAN@ LITERATURE, ART, & SOCIAL STUDIES
In response to the Tucson Unified School District dismantling Mexican American Studies classes in Tucson, XITO sponsors the Chican@ Literature, Art, & Social Studies (CLASS) program- a Prescott College class for high school students which meets at Prescott College Tucson. Former Mexican American Studies teacher, Curtis Acosta, founded CLASS as an intentional strategy for continuing the teaching of Chican@ literature and history, a right every student should have, while it continues to be banned in Tucson.
CLASS will be organized and taught by Curtis Acosta and Sean Arce, the two leading scholars that founded the Mexican American Studies program in TUSD; a program that has become a model for engaging Latina/o students throughout the nation.
Within one year, CLASS students have presented at a national conference, contributed their ideas for the education direction of Tucson within a landmark desegregation case for Tucson Unified School District, as well as had a chapter accepted for publication in a forthcoming book from Rethinking Schools.
